Carmo Church & Bones chappel
Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Igreja do Carmo) – Faro
The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, commonly known as Igreja do Carmo, is one of Faro’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1719 by the Carmelite Order, the church is a striking example of Baroque architecture in the Algarve, featuring an elegant façade with twin bell towers and a richly adorned interior.
Inside, visitors are greeted by lavish gilded woodwork (talha dourada), marble altars, and detailed religious sculptures. The main altar, dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is particularly impressive for its ornate craftsmanship and vibrant decoration.
However, what truly sets this church apart is its Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones), located at the back of the building. Constructed in the early 19th century, this small chapel is lined with the skulls and bones of over 1,000 Carmelite monks. It serves as a somber yet powerful reflection on mortality and the transient nature of life, bearing the inscription: "Pára aqui a considerar que a este estado hás de chegar" ("Stop here and consider, that you too will reach this state").
Today, Igreja do Carmo is both a place of worship and a popular tourist attraction, blending religious devotion, artistic heritage, and a profound sense of history in the heart of Faro.
