Monchique Village

Monchique – Algarve,
Nestled in the green hills of the Serra de Monchique, the village of Monchique offers a peaceful and scenic escape from the coastal bustle of the Algarve. Known for its fresh mountain air, lush landscapes, and traditional charm, Monchique is often referred to as the “garden of the Algarve.” 

The village features narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with colorful trim, and a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. At its heart is the Mother Church (Igreja Matriz de Monchique), dating back to the 16th century, with its beautiful Manueline doorway and striking interior. 

Monchique is also famous for its natural springs, particularly in Caldas de Monchique, a nearby spa village known since Roman times for its healing waters. The region is rich in local crafts, including woodwork, woven baskets, and the distinctive medronho—a strong fruit brandy made from the arbutus tree berries that grow in the surrounding hills. 

Hikers and nature lovers are drawn to the area for trails leading to the highest point in the Algarve, Fóia (902 meters), offering panoramic views all the way to the Atlantic coast on clear days.
