Saint Anthony Church
Church of St. Anthony (Igreja de Santo António) – Lagos, Portugal
The Church of St. Anthony, located in the heart of Lagos, is one of the most remarkable examples of Baroque architecture in the Algarve. Built in 1707 and later rebuilt in 1769 after being damaged by the 1755 earthquake, the church is known for its richly decorated interior, which contrasts with its modest exterior.
The interior is a masterpiece of gilded woodwork (talha dourada), with intricate carvings covering the walls, pulpit, and altar. The ceiling features ornate paintings, and the overall design reflects the deep religious devotion and artistic craftsmanship of 18th-century Portugal. The church was historically used by the military and is sometimes referred to as the “soldiers’ church.”
Adjacent to the church is the Municipal Museum Dr. José Formosinho, which offers additional historical and cultural context, including sacred art, archaeology, and ethnography collections.
Today, the Church of St. Anthony is both a place of worship and a cultural landmark, attracting visitors interested in history, art, and architecture. It stands as a testament to Lagos's religious and artistic heritage.
