Vasco da Gama bridge
Vasco da Gama Bridge (Ponte Vasco da Gama)
The Vasco da Gama Bridge is the longest bridge in Portugal and one of the longest in Europe, stretching over 17 kilometers (about 10.7 miles) across the Tagus River. Located in the eastern part of Lisbon, it was inaugurated in 1998 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s historic voyage to India.
This modern cable-stayed bridge was built to ease traffic congestion on the 25th of April Bridge and to support Lisbon’s growing infrastructure needs. Designed to withstand strong winds and even earthquakes, it is an impressive feat of contemporary engineering.
With its sleek design and panoramic views over the Tagus estuary, the Vasco da Gama Bridge is both a vital transport link and a symbol of modern Lisbon. It connects the northern and southern regions of Portugal and provides direct access to key motorways.
Beyond its practical importance, the bridge is a striking visual element in the city’s skyline and a testament to Portugal’s forward-looking spirit.
